Arthur Bienenstock is Professor Emeritus of Photon Science, Special Assistant to the Stanford University President for Federal Research Policy and Associate Director of the Wallenberg Research Link. President Obama appointed Bienenstock to serve on the National Science Board of the National Science Foundation, the culmination of a lifetime of service to the nation in science policy and the science and technology of synchrotron radiation. In this role, he led the NSB's Task Force on Administrative Burden. During the Clinton administration, Bienenstock served as the associate director for science in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) where he sought to gain general recognition of the interdependencies of the sciences and the need for the country to maintain broad scientific and technological strength. He also sought to ensure that the United States had a scientific and technological workforce, at all levels, to meet the nation's twenty-first century needs. He led a task force on the government-university research partnership aimed at strengthening the relationship, and championed an interagency education research initiative to fund large-scale, interdisciplinary research on teaching and learning. His research on X-ray scattering earned him the directorship of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL). He also served as president of the American Physical Society.
