On May 12, 2021, CISP Cochairs Arthur Bienenstock and Olufunmilayo Falusi Olopade were featured speakers at an event hosted by Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. The webinar – International Scientific Collaboration: Critical Tasks for the Biden Administration – was part of the Institute’s .
Drs. Bienenstock and Olopade were asked to speak about the essential role of international collaboration in maintaining U.S. leadership in science & technology and to put forth recommendations for the Biden administration to implement that would strengthen the U.S. scientific enterprise through international engagement. They drew from their own experiences in international collaboration as well as findings of the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ’s Challenges for International Scientific Partnerships initiative, especially from its first report, America and the International Future of Science.
Dr. Bienenstock emphasized the need for balancing cooperation and competition between the U.S. and China, and Dr. Olopade highlighted her own international work to discover breast cancer risks to African and African-American women. They were subsequently joined in an audience Q&A by moderator Kenneth Evans, Baker Institute Scholar in Science and Technology policy.
