The Media in Society

Overview

The role of a free and effective press in a democracy and its impact on public policy are at the center of this study, which included an exploration of news reporting in two areas:

  1. how information about science and technology is diffused through the media; and
  2. the quality and effectiveness of business reporting and analysis, with particular attention to how varied media inform the public about economic policy issues.

The study considered the impact of new technologies and evolving patterns of news consumption on the economic models that have long supported traditional print and broadcast media, and the changing nature of journalism in today’s digital world.
