Vivek Malhotra is ICREA Research Professor and Group Leader at the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona, Spain. ICREA is the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies, a foundation supported by the Catalan Government and guided by a Board of Trustees. The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is an international biomedical research nonprofit institute of excellence. The mission of the CRG is to discover and advance knowledge for the benefit of society, public health and economic prosperity.

He is a leading researcher on protein secretion and cellular compartmentation. His laboratory focuses on elucidating the mechanisms by which cells are compartmentalized and ensure the secretion of essential proteins such as collagens, mucins, insulin, hormones, and cytokines of appropriate quality in response to physiological demands. He leads work on investigating how cells synthesize compartments like the Golgi complex and establish exit sites for cargo export at the endoplasmic reticulum. Malhotra's goal is to leverage the comprehension of these intricate processes to address human pathologies related to skin scarring, wound healing, and tissue fibrosis. Related work involves exploring the mechanisms underlying the age-related reduction in the production of proteins like collagens and the implications thereof.

Malhotra received his PhD in biochemistry from Oxford University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University.
