Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana ~Novelist; Essayist; Distinguished Professor of English, Emeritus. Taught at Indiana University from 1971 until 2009. Among his works are novels, collections of stories, and works of personal nonfiction, including Staying Put (1993), Writing from the Center (1995), and Hunting for Hope (1998). Recent books are A Private History of Awe (2006), a coming-of-age memoir, love story, and spiritual testament, and A Conservationist Manifesto (2009), his vision of a shift from a culture of consumption to a culture of caretaking. Writing examines the human place in nature, the pursuit of social justice, the relation between culture and geography, and the search for a spiritual path. Selection of essays was published as Earth Works in 2012. Among his honors are the Lannan Literary Award, the John Burroughs Essay Award, the Mark Twain Award, and the Cecil Woods, Jr. Award in Nonfiction from the Fellowship of Southern Writers. Contributing Editor to Orion magazine and a frequent public lecturer. Received fellowships for his writing from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lilly Foundation, the Indiana Arts Commission, Phillips Exeter Çï¿ûÊÓƵ, and the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Serves, or has served, on the boards of regional and national organizations concerned with conservation, peacemaking, and environmental protection.~
