Freeman is a leading political philosopher. He has done important work on distributive justice, on liberalism and its history, on democracy, on social contract theory, and on constitutionalism. He has written numerous important and insightful articles on these topics, many of which are collected in his books,Liberalism and Distributive Justice (2018) and Justice and the Social Contract (2006). He is the pre-eminent interpreter of the work of John Rawls, and is the author of Rawls (2007), the most comprehensive and authoritative study yet written about John Rawls's philosophy. In recent years he has been a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books, for which he has written comprehensive reviews of some of the most important books in recent moral and political philosophy, including Amartya Sen's The Idea of Justice and Derek Parfit's On What Matters.
