Anna Garbedian Professor of the Humanities, Columbia University. Author of scholarly studies of American literature and culture. Known for attention to the cross-currents of intellectual history between writers, philosophers and activists. Central work, grounded in the traditions of pragmatism and liberalism, treats racial and ethnic identity as products of the intersection of American and modern European thought. Recent titles include Philip Roth's Rude Truth: The Art of Immaturity (2006) and The Cambridge Companion to Ralph Ellison (2005). He is series editor of Cambridge Studies in American Literature and Culture and is a contributing editor of Raritan and American Literary History. Recipient of 1994 Guggenheim Fellowship.
