Leader in design and conduct of integrated assessment to inform national and international environmental policy.  Experience extends from climate science to foreign relations and international development. Co-directed “Sustaining Environmental Capital” for the Executive Office of the President, lead author of the U.S. National Climate Assessment, and co-director of the World Bank’s World Development Report “Development and Climate Change”. Chairs the Scientific and Advisory Panel of the Global Environment Facility, serves on President Obama's Council of Advisers on Science and Technology, and is an Adaptation Fellow at the World Bank. Served for two decades in both the Legislative and Executive branches of the U.S. Government. Current research focuses on bringing adaptation information from the practitioner world to the academic world, and vice versa, to develop 'best practices' and 'lessons learned'. Dean Emerita at University of Michigan where she facilitated  the creation of a new undergraduate Program in the Environment and developed new Master’s tracks to link engineering, architecture and urban planning, and natural resources.  Board member of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Federation of American Scientists, the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, the Climate Reality Project, and the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement.  Serves on advisory bodies to Morgan Stanley and the International Finance Corporation.
