Since 2001 he has served as the Annenberg Visiting Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. From 1975 to 2006 he taught at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, where he was Director of Studies (1984-2006). He has taken up such topics as publishing houses and printing, the history of the book, the history of letter writing and of private life, and, most recently, playwriting in early modern France, England, and Spain. He also hosted the radio show Les lundis de l'histoire on France Culture, in which he interviewed historians who recently published books.
