Voorhees published seminal papers on the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations in systems ranging from metal alloys to thin film semiconductors. His papers on Ostwald ripening phenomena and the development of interfacial morphology in stressed solids are prominent within his field. He also developed experimental methods for measuring the three-dimensional microstructure of materials, and methods to quantify the resulting phase morphology and temporal evolution. Finally, his work on the dynamics of precipitate evolution in multicomponent alloys led to the creation of a computer simulation code, TC-PRISMA that is widely used by industry in materials design efforts.
