Noted for comparative study of immigration, comparing contemporary immigration with that of earlier periods and immigrant minorities in the United States and Europe. From Ellis Island to JFK: New York's Two Great Waves of Immigration (2000) was the first in-depth comparison of two most recent immigration eras in the United States. Recipient, Theodore Saloutos Book Award of the Immigration and Ethnic History Society. Another publication, In A New Land: A Comparative View of Immigration (2005), was elected Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2006. Her most recent book, Strangers No More: Immigration and the Challenges of Integration in North America and Western Europe (2015) compares the integration of immigrants and their children in key Western countries. Received the Distinguished Career Award from the International Migration Section of the American Sociological Association in 2010. Research is particularly relevant given present-day immigration to the United States and Western Europe and its policy implications.
