Poet; Ireland Professor of Poetry ( 2007-2010). Published eleven collections of poetry including Gorse Fires (1991), winner of the Whitbread Poetry Award; and the Weather in Japan (2000) which won the Hawthornden Prize, the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Irish Times Poetry Prize. Most recent collections  are The Stairwell (2014), which won the International Griffin Prize, and Angel Hill (2017).  In 2001 he was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry, in 2003 the Wilfred Owen Award, in 2010 a CBE, and in 2018 the inaugural Yakamochi Medal.
