Luiz Andre Barroso
Luiz André Barroso was a Google Fellow and the head of the office of Cross-Google Engineering (xGE) which was responsible for company-wide technical coordination. In his time at Google he has worked as a VP of Engineering in the Core and Maps teams, and as the technical leader in areas such as Google Search and the design of Google‘s computing platform. Barroso has co-authored research articles in areas such as computer architecture, energy efficient computing and distributed systems. He co-wrote "The Datacenter as a Computer", the first textbook to describe the architecture of warehouse-scale computing systems, now in its 3rd edition.
Barroso was a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the National Çï¿ûÊÓƵ of Engineering and of the American Çï¿ûÊÓƵ of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of the 2020 ACM/IEEE Computer Society Eckert Mauchly award. From 2013-2019 he served on the National Academies' Computer Science and Telecommunications Board.
Before Google, he was a member of the research staff at Digital Equipment Corporation and Compaq, which undertook pioneering research on modern multi-core microprocessors. He has B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the PontifÃcia Universidade Católica of Rio de Janeiro, and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California.
