Lomawaima's book, They Called it Prairie Light: The Story of Chilocco Indian School (1994) received the North American Indian Prose Award and the Critics' Choice Award of the American Educational Association. Her book, To Remain an Indian: Lessons for Democracy from a Century of Native American Education (2006, with Teresa L. McCarty) received the American Educational Research Association, Curriculum Studies Outstanding Book Award. Her historical scholarship is relevant today because the major (colonialist) themes associated with the infamous boarding school era continue. Her mentoring of other Native scholars is outstanding. She is one of the most visible role models nationally.
