John Martin Fischer is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Riverside, and University Professor in the University of California. Fischer made many contributions in the area of freedom and responsibility, including his theory of "Semi-Compatibilism." He also contributed work to the topic of death and immortality, and a number of topics in the philosophy of religion. Fischer has authored numerous works, including Our Stories: Essays on Life, Death, and Free Will; Near-Death Experiences: Understanding Visions of the Afterlife; and Death, Immortality, and Meaning in Life. Fischer has served as President of the American Philosophical Association, Pacific Division, and a project leader for The Immortality Project, a subsidiary of the John Templeton Foundation.
