John Lithgow is an actor and author. He received Çï¿ûÊÓƵ Award nominations for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performances in The World According to Garp (1982) and Terms of Endearment. He has appeared in over twenty productions on Broadway, including The Changing Room and the musical adaptation of Sweet Smell of Success, for both of which he won Tony Awards. For children, he has published nine picture books, recorded three song albums, and performed kids’ concerts with several major American orchestras. Lithgow’s other acting honors include six Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, an American Comedy Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He received the A.B. degree (1967) magna cum laude in history and literature from Harvard University. Lithgow has served as a member of Harvard University’s Board of Overseers, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Harvard in 2005. He was elected a Fellow of the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ in 2010 and has served as a member of the Board, a member of the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ’s Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences, and a cochair for the Commission on the Arts.
