Research centers on respiratory and environmental physiology. He has worked extensively on many aspects of pulmonary physiology including the pulmonary circulation, mechanics, and gas exchange. His research has included studies at extreme altitude on Mt. Everest and on astronauts in space. He is the author of standard teaching texts on respiratory physiology, and also several books on the history of physiology.
