Professor Joan Wallach Scott is Professor Emerita in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study and an Adjunct Faculty member of the Graduate Center, CUNY.  Scott also has taught at Brown University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She was the founding director of Brown University's Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women.  She is the author and editor of books on the history of France, labor history and feminism, and her theoretical work on gender has been crucial to the development of the field. She is noted also for careful empirical work. Some awards include, the Hans Sigrist Prize from the University of Bern, the Joan Kelly Prize, the Nancy Roelker Award for graduate student mentorship, the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize, and  the Award for Scholarly Distinction from the American Historical Association. She is a founding editor of the journal, History of the Present: A Journal of Critical History.
