Professor James J. Sheehan is the Dickason Professor Emeritus in the Humanities, Professor Emeritus of History, and a Senior Fellow by courtesy of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. Hisesearch centers on modern European history. He has written about the development of German liberalism, problems of national identity and nation building in Germany, and the emergence of the art museum in the nineteenth century. Recently he has begun to work on the European society of states in the twentieth century, with particular emphasis on the question of sovereignty in theory and practice. He served as president of the American Historical Association in 2005. Sheehan has many won many grants and awards, including the Officer's Cross of the German Order of Merit in 1998.
