Jacqueline Stewart’s research on African American film cultures combines meticulous historiography with original theoretical analysis to reveal the ways African Americans intervene in the structures of the dominant Hollywood film industry. Her scholarship reframes the legacies of black actors, filmmakers, and spectators through efforts as varied as unfolding our understanding of humor in Jim Crow-era comedies, to the archival preservation and exhibition of amateur films in the South Side Home Movie Project. Stewart’s academic investigations and curatorial practices, including work on the L.A. Rebellion Preservation Project’s oral histories and touring retrospective, redress important gaps in our collective cultural history.
