Sterling Professor of Political Science, Yale University. His principal research interests are in the methodologies of the social sciences, theories of justice and distribution, and the prospects for democracy in post-communist societies and sub-Saharan Africa. He is currently engaged on a study of the types of redistribution that occur in capitalist democracies, with particular attention to why some are more unequal than others. Recent books: The Wolf at the Door: The Menace of Economic Insecurity and how to Fight it, with Michael Graetz (Harvard University Press, 2020); Responsible Parties: Saving Democracy from Itself, with Frances Rosenbluth (Yale University Press, 2018); and Politics Against Domination (Harvard University Press, 2016).
