Born and raised in Scotland, David Garland, FBA, FRSE is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh and taught there from 1979 to 1997 before moving to the USA. He has been a leading figure in developing the sociology of punishment and has made important contributions to the history of criminological thought, sociological theory, and historical sociology. His award-winning books include Punishment and Welfare (1985/2018); Punishment and Modern Society (1990); The Culture of Control (2001) and Peculiar Institution: America’s Death Penalty in an Age of Abolition (2010). His most recent book is The Welfare State: A Very Short Introduction, published by Oxford University Press in Spring, 2016.
