Research focuses on demographic change in Southeast Asia and race and ethnicity, particularly recent immigrants to the United States. He has written extensively on ehtnic stratification in Malaysia, and more broadly on family and fertility in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. He has also published empirical analyses of social change in Vietnam on varied topics, including family structure and war mortality. In addition, he analyzes census and survey data to measure race and ethnic inequality in the United States, including the socioeconomic progress of recent immigrants.
