Peder Sather Professor of European History. Authority on modern French history, politics, and society, recognized for Publishing and Cultural Politics in Revolutionary Paris, 1789-1810 (1991) and The Other Enlightenment: How French Women Became Modern (2003). Co-edited Human Rights in Political Transitions: Gettysburg to Bosnia (1999). Other work includes writing on the concept of intellectual property and how it developed over several millennia. Awarded the Aby Warburg Prize (2007). Currently focuses on legal and cultural aspects of political violence; working on a study analyzing the fate of Rousseau in the French Revolution.
