Uses advanced quantitative methods in social analysis. Early work was a comparative and historical analysis of trade union movements in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries after WWII. Played a leading role in studying the social and political consequences of incarceration and the dynamics of social inequalities in the United States.
