Research is focused on evolutionary genetics. His work on selection in age-structured populations has been applied to the understanding of aging. He has worked on many aspects of the evolution of genetic systems, including sex recombination, inbreeding and outbreeding mechanisms, the evolution of separate sexes and sex chromosomes, segregation distortion, and repetitive DNA. He has developed models of how selection at linked sites affects molecular variation and evolution. He is currently testing these theories, using data on DNA sequence variation and evolution.
