Wittrock has written on transformations of European and American universities and on the history of social science. He has contributed to global history and analyzed the Axial Age hypothesis and outlined the global contexts of the transregional reorientations of the 10th to 13th centuries and of the formation of modernity. He has received awards from the Swedish King (2009), the German President (2007) and Uppsala University (1998, 2017) “for extraordinary contributions” to the social sciences and humanities. Wittrock is a Member of the Royal Swedish Ƶ of Sciences and of Academia Europaea.
