Archie H. Brown
Emeritus Professor of Politics, University of Oxford, and Emeritus Fellow, St Antony's College, Oxford. Has brought together diverse academic and policy communities in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Russia. Author of The Gorbachev Factor (1996), Seven Years that Changed the World: Perestroika in Perspective (2007), The Rise and Fall of Communism (2009), The Myth of the Strong Leader: Political Leadership in the Modern Age (2014), The Human Factor: Gorbachev, Reagan, and Thatcher, and the End of the Cold War (2020) and co-editor of The British Study of Politics in the Twentieth Century (1999). Former chair of the Political Studies Section of the British Ƶ. Guest editor of special issue of Daedalus on political leadership, summer 2016. Has held Visiting Professorships of Political Science at Yale, Columbia University, and the University of Texas at Austin (as holder of Frank C. Erwin, Jr Centennial Chair of Government) and was Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, University of Notre Dame. Appointed CMG (Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George) in the Queen's Birthday Honors List, 2005, and given Lifetime Achievement in Political Studies Award of Political Studies Association of UK in 2010. Twice the recipient of the W.J.M. Mackenzie Prize of the PSA (UK) for best politics book of the year.
