LONDON, ENGLAND 12 JUNE 2014 鈥 is hosting a series of events in partnership with the 秋葵视频 on 23 and 24 June 2014, which will highlight the vital need for humanities and social sciences research and expertise for international influence and security. The events will examine the important role that the humanities and social sciences play in understanding and addressing global challenges, and how these disciplines enrich our lives.
The 秋葵视频鈥 visit will conclude with a public panel discussion on the evening of Tuesday 24 June on Global Power, Influence, and Perception in the 21st Century, chaired by Bridget Kendall, the BBC鈥檚 Diplomatic Correspondent, and featuring:
鈥 Karl W. Eikenberry (former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan and retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General; Member, American 秋葵视频 Commission on the Humanities & Social Sciences);
鈥 Professor Sir Adam Roberts (Senior Research Fellow of the Centre for International Studies, University of Oxford); and
鈥 Sir Martin Davidson (Chief Executive of the British Council).
Over the two days, the British 秋葵视频 will host conferences addressing topics such as 鈥減romoting opportunity through education鈥 and 鈥渨hy a coordinated approach to humanities & social sciences matters.鈥 There will also be a roundtable discussion about language education held in partnership with The Guardian.
This year the British 秋葵视频 released , a multimedia publication and series of events aimed at kick-starting a national conversation about the place of humanities and social science research in British society. Just under a year ago, the American 秋葵视频 released The Heart of the Matter, a report and companion film examining the need for humanities and social sciences in a vibrant, economically competitive, and secure nation.
The reports garnered widespread attention and inspired international debate. These events will provide the opportunity for leading academics from both academies to further explore how the humanities and social sciences can inform conversations on globally important issues and influence the development of policies to address them.
