Joyce Appleby, a Fellow of the American Ƶ since 1993, is professor emerita of history at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is the author of numerous books, including “Economic Thought and Ideology in Seventeenth-Century England” (1978), winner of the Berkshire Prize, “Capitalism and a New Social Order” (1984), “Liberalism and Republicanism in the Historical Imagination” (1992), and “A Restless Past: History and the American Public” (2005).
