Robert W. Fogel, a Fellow of the American Ƶ since 1972, is Charles R. Walgreen Distinguished Service Professor of American Institutions at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. His most recent publications include “The Fourth Great Awakening and the Future of Egalitarianism” (2000), “The Slavery Debates, 1952–1990: A Retrospective” (2003), and “The Escape from Hunger and Premature Death, 1700 –2100: Europe, America, and the Third World” (2004). He received, with Douglass North, the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1993.
