Matthew Anthony Evangelista

Matthew Evangelista is the President White Professor of History and Political Science (Emeritus) at Cornell University, where he teaches courses in international and comparative politics. His current teaching and research interests focus on the relationship between gender, nationalism, and war; ethical and legal issues in international affairs (particularly, just war theory and international humanitarian law); transnational relations; and separatist movements. 

Evangelista has authored six books, including  Allied Air Attacks and Civilian Harm in Italy, 1940–1945: Bombing among Friends (London: Routledge, 2023), as well as many articles, including A “Nuclear Umbrella” for Ukraine? Precedents and Possibilities for Postwar European Security (International Security, vol. 48, no. 3, Winter 2023/24). He graduated from Harvard College as well as Cornell University, where he received his doctorate.
