RG XXI: Committee on the History of Statistics and Statistical Thought

ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Historical Note

The Committee on the History of Statistics and Statistical Thought officially was in operation from 1974-1978. It operated as a sub-committee of the larger Çï¿ûÊÓƵ Committee on the History of Recent Science and Technology. I. Bernard Cohen was Chair for the duration of the Committee, with Barbara Rosenkrantz serving as Vice-Chair.

An exploratory meeting was first held by committee members on January 18-19, 1974 after which the Committee was formally established. The Committee's first meeting was held May 24, 1975, when it was decided to focus on building a roster of people working within the field and a bibliography and guide to literature that would call attention to work that needs to be done in specific areas. A workshop for this purpose was held on June 21, 1976. Further support for operations was sought but never received, and the Committee eventually folded in 1978.

Funding was provided by the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ’s Committee on Research Funds.

Arrangement

Processing for the series utilized MPLP principles, thus minimum preservation steps were taken, and folder titles listed in the finding aid are as they appear on the actual folders. Original order was mostly maintained. Roughly chronological papers were found loose within a box received of Alexandra Oleson. They were refoldered in the order they were present and given an ascribed title.

The series contains no subseries and is arranged roughly chronologically.
