RG XXI: Ethical Aspects of Experimentation on Human Subjects Working Group

ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Historical Note

The Ethical Aspects of Experimentation in Human Subjects Working Party was officially active from 1966-1969. Led by Paul Freund, its purpose was to examine the ethical and legal problems involved in experimentation with human beings, with a particular focus on medical experimentation. The group met periodically between 1966-1968 and developed two conferences, held in November 1967 and September 1968. The work eventually resulted in a Daedalus publication, "Ethical Aspects of Experimentation with Human Subjects" Vol. 98, No. 2, Spring 1969.

Funding was provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Unedited speeches by participants, one unknown, for the September 1968 conference are included, also.  No administrative files such as memoranda or correspondence are contained in this collection.

Arrangement

Processing for the series utilized MPLP principles, thus minimum preservation steps were taken, and folder titles listed in the finding aid are as they appear on the actual folders. Records of the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ Committee were kept by the office of John Voss, Chief Executive Officer of the Çï¿ûÊÓƵ.

Arranged into two subseries: Subseries 1: Working Party; and Subseries 2: Conference. Subseries 2: Conference is further arranged into two sub-subseries: Sub-subseries 2.1: Conference materials; and Sub-subseries 2.2: Papers. Each grouping is arranged chronologically, with the exception of Sub-subseries 2: Papers, which is arranged alphabetically.
